Comments:

1) Junwei- He explained his answers clearly, & he included the diagrams of sodium atom and sodium ions, this can help others who don't know to differentiate between atom and ions.

2) Kaiqi- She explained it clearly and i like her answers for question three, it is detailed and easy to understand. The diagrams are clear and helps me to understand better.

3) Xueting- She explained her answers in details and it is informative. She included diagrams and even her own drawing to explain her answers. Her drawings are neat and tidy, which make it easy to understand.

Q5. Sodium is a metal & sulfur is a non- metal. Explain why we classify them this way.
Metals- conduct electricity, lose electrons to complete valence shell.
Non- metals- insulator of electricity, gain electrons to complete valence shell.

Sodium, is a conductor of electricity & it lose onelectrons to omplete the valence shell to make it stable. Hence, sodiuis a metal.
Sulfur, is insulatorofelectricity, & it gain teo electrons to complete the valence shell to make it stable. Hence, sulfur is a non- metal.

Q4. Chlorine-35 & chlorine-37 are called isotopes. Use these two examples to explain what is isotopes.

Isotopes- different atoms of the same element which have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons.

Chlorine-35 consists of 17 protons & 18 neutrons, while chlorine-37 consists of 17 protons & 20 neutrons. They have the same number of protons but they contain different number of neutrons, hence they are isotopes.

Q3. Draw the atomic structure of a sulfur atom & sulfide ions. Explain why you draw it this way.
Sulfur is found in group (VI), it electronic configuration is (2.8.6). The first shell can consists a max of two electrons, the second shell can consists a max of 8 electrons and the remaining 6 electrons on the third shells. In order to make it stable for sulfur ions, it needs to lose 2 electrons so that it complete the valence shell.

Q2. Draw tatomic tructureof sodium atom & sodium ions. Explain why you draw it this way.
I draw it this way because sodium atom consists of 11 electrons, the innermost shell can only consists of 2 electrons, while the other two shells can consists up to a max of 8 electrons. However, sodium ion need to give away one electron to complete the valence shell (to make it stable).

Q1. What does an atom looks like? what are the sub-atomic particles inseide?
Atoms are made up of three types of particles- protons, neutrons and electrons. These particles have different properties. Electrons are tiny, light particles that have a negative electrical charge (-). Protons are large heavier and larger than electrons, and it have a positive electrical charge (+). Neutrons are as large and as heavy as protons, but it has no electrical charge, hence atoms are always neutral. There is a nucleus in the center of the atom, the neutrons and protons are found in the nucleus, while electrons are found outside of the nucleus.
